State pension isn’t paid automatically at state pension age – how to claim amount | Personal Finance | Finance
The state pension can make up a significant chunk of a person’s income during retirement. While there’s no set retirement age in the UK anymore, there is a state pension age.
It’s possible to check what a person’s state pension age is online, via the “Check your State Pension age” tool.
To use this, people must submit their date of birth.
Some, depending on date of birth, will also need to state whether they are classed as male or female.
The user will then be told what their state pension age is and what date they will reach or have reached it.
It is possible to defer getting the state pension, and this is done by simply not claiming it.
For those who wish to claim it, there are various ways to do so – and they differ depending on whether it’s the basic or the new state pension being claimed.
How to claim the basic state pension
There are three ways to claim the basic state pension.
- Over the phone
- By downloading the state pension claim form and sending it to the local pension centre
- Claiming from abroad including the Channel Islands.
Those in the latter situation can either contact the International Pension Centre online or telephone, or send the international claim form to the International Pension Centre.
How to claim the new state pension
No later than two months before reaching state pension age, people should receive a letter telling them what to do in terms of claiming the new state pension.
The quickest way to get the new state pension is to apply online, the Government website says.
“How to claim is different if you claim from Northern Ireland,” the Government website states.
There are other options, such as downloading the state pension claim form and sending it to the local pension centre.
People can also phone the Pension Service to get a state pension claim form posted to their address.
Claiming the new state pension from abroad, including the Channel Islands, is different.
Like with the basic state pension, it can be claimed by contacting the International Pension Centre or by sending the international claim form to the International Pension Centre.
